Why I responded to Yvonne Nelson with only diss songs – Sarkodie opens up

Ghanaian Hip Hop singer, Sarkodie, has finally addressed the charges made against him by movie star and author Yvonne Nelson regarding her pregnancy in her memoir, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson.’

During an interview with American media personality Angela Yee, Sarkodie explained why he didn’t issue an official statement in response to the allegations. Instead, he chose to address them through music in a diss track titled ‘Try Me.’

In the song, Sarkodie denied Yvonne’s accusations, stating that he wasn’t prepared to be a parent but encouraged her to keep the child. He revealed that he refrained from going on a media tour to respond to the claims because he feared losing his temper. By expressing himself through music, he could accurately convey his side of the story.

Sarkodie also revealed that people often make allegations against him in the media, knowing that he rarely responds to them. Addressing the issue through music allowed him to set the record straight and handle the situation in his own way.

“The reason I didn’t do any media run or press around it [Yvonne Nelson’s allegations] is because I might lose how I would like to present what I feel about it. This is not the first time. I have done records to address certain issues, or maybe a line or two in a record. There is a certain energy I hate to fill into, especially speaking about it because I might lose my cool.

“With this situation, I’m not going to say I’m super proud of everything. The thing is just in a moment how I felt whether be my truth there should be a way I would have said it.

“That is why I don’t like to speak about it. This is a conversation between two people. We could have a conversation if you want to talk about it because it involves me as well. But because people know Sark doesn’t speak, people think they can say something and know Sark is not going to speak and they are gonna get away,” the singer said.

In Yvonne Nelson’s book, she also accused her ex-boyfriend, Iyanya, of cheating on her with Tonto Dikeh, which resulted in their breakup.

“We had a good relationship,” she said, “With breakfast in bed and all the pleasantries a perfect relationship should have. I knew he was someone I could spend the rest of my life with. I thought it was a huge deal when he tattooed my initials, YN, on my wrist. He wouldn’t do it if he wasn’t sincere about me. He described lusting for me in his smash song ‘Ur Waist’. Imagine my surprise when I arrived in Ghana after a visit to Nigeria and received a phone call from his house.”
