Yannick Noah is a French singer and former professional tennis player. Noah won the French Open in 1983 and is currently France’s Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup captain. Noah won 23 singles titles and 16 doubles titles during his nearly two-decade career, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3 in July 1986 and world No. 1 in doubles the following month. Noah has remained in the public eye since his retirement from the game as a popular music performer and as the co-founder, with his mother, of a charity organisation for underprivileged children. Noah is also the father of Joakim Noah, a former NBA player.
Yannick Noah was born in 1960 in Sedan, France, to Cameroonian footballer Zacharie Noah and his white French wife Marie-Claire. Noah’s father returned to Africa with his family following a sports injury in 1963. When he made his tennis debut at the age of 11, he was living in Cameroon and was discovered by Arthur Ashe and Charlie Pasarell. He quickly demonstrated incredible talent, landing him at the French Tennis Federation’s training centre in Nice in 1971.
Noah rose to prominence in France as the first Frenchman in 37 years to win the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam singles events, in 1983. He dropped just one set during the two-week tournament and defeated Sweden’s Mats Wilander in straight sets in the final, 6-2, 7-5, 7-6. He is the last and only Frenchman to win the French Open men’s singles title. Noah won the French Open men’s doubles title with compatriot and best friend Henri Leconte in 1984. He also finished second in men’s doubles at the 1985 U.S. Open (with Leconte) and the 1987 French Open (with compatriot Guy Forget).
