The Holdovers was a film that took the world by storm. At first, seeming like a comedy film that showcases the conflict between a student and a teacher, it ends up telling its audience a beautiful story about companionship and loneliness, two favorites of cinema. The movie was so well received amongst audiences that it became one of the most critically acclaimed projects of 2023. It has also been nominated for five Academy Awards.
A majority of viewers adored the movie when they went to watch it, and returned with an excellent experience. However, this wasn’t the case for everyone. Unfortunately, for a group of 40 people, it turned into one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives. This was because the staff of the cinema forgot about them!

The movie-going experience is one that many hold dearly in their hearts. The experience of watching a project that is made to make their audience feel things is more than a little cathartic. Unfortunately, often times these experiences can get tainted through outside forces or, in this case, the lack thereof.
It was revealed by O Globo, via Discussing Films on X, that a group of 40 people were locked inside a movie theatre during the screening of The Holdovers. The staff of the theatre forgot that the screening was going on, and ended up locking the gates from the outside. This resulted in turning the experience of watching a fun comedy movie into something extremely stressful and terrifying.

After the 40 people in the theatre were freed and able to go home, many spoke out about what the experience was like. Ruth Kauffmann, a retired teacher, stated that at that moment, all anyone could think of was trying to get freedom. They didn’t know how to focus on anything other than this, finding it difficult to proceed.

She also made a correlation to The Holdovers itself, stating that they couldn’t help but feel like the character of Angus Tully, played by Dominic Sessa. While his character is not an orphan, having lost only his father, Kauffmann stated that it felt to them as though they were orphans, begging to be let out.
