The tunnels of Gray Summit, MO - Trains Magazine
Forget it, Those tunnels are burried deep into the woods, and Hiking is the only way in or out. However, if you are going to be in that area, Try Pacifc. There, the BNSF Cuba Sub and the Union Pacific's Jefferson City Sub run side by side there. Its easy to get to, and the road runs along side it for a distance.
Since you are going to be out that way, don't forget to take the Family to Six Flags over Mid-America, right there in Eureka, if you are heading to Grey's Summit, you will pass right by it.
Since you may not get to railfan while here, you might as well railfan along the way. If you are coming down I-55 into Downtown, Try to avoid Popler Street Bridge, they are rebuilding the Tudor Av. Exit and just the other day, there was a 8.5 mile traffic jam. However, Get off onto I-270, cross over the Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi then go to I-70 into Downtown, then Take I-44 West, this way you will avoid the mess, and still pass right by the BNSF Lindenwood Yard, and then Parrallel it to just short of Lindburgh Blvd. Either that or you can miss BOTH by Taking I-270 all the way to I-44, but then again, you will also hit traffic in Kirkwood, where they are rebuilding the Doughtery Ferry Bridge. Another thing you may want to consider is to Go to the very last exit, on the Missouri side and go down IL Rte 3 into Dupo, Right after crossing the bridge over the tracks, make a right at the light, here you will fallow the UP Tracks past the Yard tower and old hump, and you can usally see LOTS of power. Then Follow that road to I-255 over the Jefferson Barricks Bridge to I-44.
Its too bad that you can't stay and do some railfanning here in St. Louis, I could show you ALOT of neat places, WR Tower, Lennox Tower, the TRRA, and much more.
Other than that, I hope that your trip is a good one, Drive safe and obay the work zone speed limits! The St. Louis County Police are very strict about work zone speeds, the Min. Fine here in Missouri is $455 for 1 MPH over!
Oh yeah, If you happen to see a Mitsubishi Fuso that says "New Mei Dong LLC" on the side, and an American (not Chinese) guy driving.....better speed up! :)
