The Top 5 Spookiest Scary Movie Places You Can Visit in Real Life
After some extensive remodeling and updating, the home actually looks quite idyllic—but I'm sorry, no amount of paint and polish can cover up the horrifying happenings of its past. It's still the same place where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six of his family members while they slept in the 1970s and where subsequent owners George and Kathleen Lutz allegedly experienced the supernatural happenings that would inspire The Amityville Horror. It's a private residence, so you can't go inside, but taking a drive past is just enough scary for me.
3. Medfield Insane Asylum (Medfield, Massachusetts)

Shutter Island and Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane are both fictitious places, but the abandoned Medfield Insane Asylum that inspired the Leonardo DiCaprio movie (and served as its filming location) is very real. The hospital has been completely abandoned for years, upping its creepy quotient, and the grounds are open to the public to walk around—if you dare.
4. The Bell Witch Cave (Adams, Tennessee)
Even Andrew Jackson was allegedly petrified of the Bell Witch, who haunted the Bell family farm in the early 1800s. Legends claim that she cursed the family out loud, slapped and pinched people, and threw objects inexplicably. The Bell Witch has led to two popular scary movies—The Blair Witch Project and An American Haunting—and those interested in getting the crap scared out of them can go to the Bell Witch Cave, located near where the family's farm once stood.
5. The Hallahan House (Southington, Connecticut)
The Snedeker family moved into the former Hallahan Funeral Home in the 1980s and reportedly fell victim to various demonic happenings, including seeing apparitions and suffering from physical attacks, over the next two years. The incidents served as the basis for The Haunting in Connecticut film, and though it's a private residence today (those brave, brave owners) that is closed to visitors, a drive-by is plenty to fulfill our frightful appetites.
Each place serves up a whole lotta scary! Which one would you dare to visit?
