Swing Tempo with irons. | Golf Monthly

I have always thought that good tempo is a result of good ball striking. So when you are hitting it really well, you find you swing with a nice even gentle tempo because you know you are going to get it there easily and that the ball is coming out of the middle of the club.

On the days when the ball striking is poor, you find yourself thrashing and hitting at the ball.

So how do you fix it ?

For me I need to get back to good strikes. Small swings with a shortish iron, concentrating on really good impact positions really helps. Literally just chipping to start with and then working into fuller swings.

If this doesn't float your boat, the other method that works quite well is to make full swings but only hit the balls a short distance. So a full swing with a 7 iron that will only go a 100 yds.
