Speed Is Everything On This CSX Intermodal - Trains Magazine

If only all intermodal trains were this fast, through most of their journeys, then they may have bigger market share. The cost of drayage is an issue but speed & good service may out way that to quite a few shippers.

According to BNSF this is what their shippers want most.

Although people disagree with me, the routes need to be upgraded for more trains at faster speeds.

Does it not come down to eliminating the slow orders and getting all track speeds up to 70 MPH? For example

1. CSX Baltimore - New Lakeland intermodal terminal  approx 960 miles 60 MPH average ( crew changes etc )16 Hrs.

2. BNSF CHI - Lax  Approx  2230 miles 37 + hrs.

3. UP  New Orleans  -  Lax   1990 miles  33+ hrs

Will it ever happen?  Probably not in my lifetime!
