Spain ran out 5-4 winners on spot kicks in Rotterdam after both side’s failed to find the target over 120 minutes.
The victory marked Spain’s first trophy since Euro 2012 and La Roya returned to Madrid to celebrate the success with a parade on Monday.
After a disappointing World Cup that saw Spain dumped out at the round-of-16 stage by Morocco, the future looks bright under new boss Luis De La Fuente as they look to build on their Nations League success with Euro 2024 qualification.
But all did not go to plan for Gavi as some fans were unable to put club allegiances aside.
As he took to the stage he was immediately greeted with chants of ‘puta Barca’ translated to ‘Barca whore.’
Gavi paused to think about how best to approach the difficult atmosphere and despite his tender age, shrugged off the insults with class.
He began by thanking the fans for their support over the two games and finished with ‘Viva Espana’ – long live Spain.
But it was a different scenario entirely for new Real Madrid striker Joselu who was given a huge ovation by the fans in attendance.
