Katherine Young passed away over the weekend following a brief illness. The news of her untimely departure has sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences from students, colleagues, and community members alike.

While the school did not elaborate on the cause of death, NBC affiliate WJAR reported 46 year old Young died after suffering from complications from the flu.

Katherine Young who dedicated a decade to teaching at Smithfield High School was remembered not only as an exceptional educator but also as a warm and caring individual.  The Smithfield High School Music Booster Club, in a Facebook post, announced her passing and expressed the profound void her absence has left in both the department and the lives of those who knew her.

Melissa Moroni, President of the Smithfield High School Music Boosters, eloquently conveyed the sentiments of the community, stating, “The loss of Katherine has definitely left a hole in our department and our lives.

Former student and friend Juliana Rivelli shared her memories of Katherine Young by highlighting the teacher’s unwavering dedication to her students. Rivelli credited Katherine Young with fostering her love for music, recounting hours of tutoring that left a lasting impact on her life.

The heartfelt post on social media encapsulated the immense loss felt not only by the Smithfield community but also by other communities Katherine had touched, including the ACDA and RoseBud.

Colleague Kelly Chartier who worked alongside Katherine in the Smithfield music department, emphasized the profound connection she had with students. “The kids just loved her. They loved her smile. It just lit up the room, there’s no other way to describe it,” said Chartier. The shock of her passing was evident in Chartier’s words, underlining the difficulty in fully processing the loss.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association urged community members to wear purple in honor of Katherine’s memory by emphasizing her impact beyond the school walls. The organization mourned the loss of a “beautiful soul” and called for prayers for Katherine’s family.
