Reactions as video of late woman behind Wizkid’s global hit ‘Everyday’ surfaces online

A video of the late woman whose voice is behind the popular global hit “Everyday” by Nigerian singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, aka Wizkid, has surfaced online, eliciting a variety of emotions from netizens.

The viral video reveals that Maya Angelou, a renowned American writer, poet and activist, is the voice behind Wizkid’s intro on Everyday, a nostalgic bop off his latest album, “More Love, Less Ego” (MLLE).

Wizkid’s fifth studio album, MLLE, was released on November 11th, 2022.

The Afrobeats phenomenon had previously released four albums: Superstar (2011), Starboy (2014), Music from the Other Side (2017), and Made in Lagos (2018).

MLLE by Wizkid has 13 tracks, and the intro samples a line of Maya’s that many referred to as “iconic”; “I am grateful to have been loved, and to be loved now, and to be able to love because that liberates, love liberates, It doesn’t just hold, that’s ego, Love liberates.”

Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928 and died on May 28, 2014. She was an American memoirist, popular poet, and civil rights activist.

She wrote seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and many books of poetry, and she is credited with over 50 plays, movies, and television productions. She was the recipient of dozens of honours and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is most known for her seven autobiographies, which centre on her childhood and adolescent years.

The first, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ (1969), chronicles her life up to the age of 17 and won her international notoriety.

She was the first Black female streetcar conductor in San Francisco when she was 16 years old. Her mother referred to it as her “dream job” since she was so taken with the outfits of the operators.

Her mother encouraged her to apply but reminded her that she would have to arrive early and work harder than others. As part of a session titled “Women Who Move the Country,” Angelou received a lifetime achievement award from the Conference of Minority Transportation Authorities in 2014.

She gave birth to her son, Clyde, three weeks after finishing high school, at the age of seventeen (who later changed his name to Guy Johnson).

Wizkid fans have rejoiced and boasted about the calibre of the Nigerian superstar; claiming that being able to have someone as renowned as Maya Angelou in his song was a feat worthy of celebration.
