New PlayStation Patent Aims To Coach and Guide Players
A new patent has been published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for a coaching system that will reportedly aim to assist PlayStation users that are “falling below a skill threshold”.
Most video games of course come with a certain amount of challenge, games such as Dark Souls will push players to their limits and require them to use skills that only years of gaming can teach you. But what if you’re more of a casual gamer that still wants to experience these titles without the constant frustration of dying?
Well, Sony’s new patent could be the answer. The new coaching system will reportedly “increase the skill of the user” in various different ways.

Sony Patents New Coaching System
Sony’s new patent was first filed on June 26th, 2020, but wasn’t published until December 30th, 2021. According to the description in the publication, the patent includes “systems and methods for coaching a user for gameplay”.
Essentially, the system will be implemented into the users gaming experience and will identify when the player is falling below a certain skill threshold. Once the user falls below the set threshold, the system will generate a recording for a window of time. A UI overlay is then placed over certain frames of the recording that will aim to “self-coach” the player through the mission or objective.
When played back, the recording and UI overlay will reportedly “provide hints for increasing a skill of the user to be above the skill threshold”.
It’s currently unclear exactly how or when this system will be implemented into PlayStation consoles, but Sony has clearly been working on it for well over a year now. If you’re interested in finding out more about the new PlayStation coaching system, the full patent can be read here.
