Mohammed Salah named 2022 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah has been named the 2022 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year.

The Egyptian forward beat Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne to win the award for the second time.

Salah ended the 2021/22 campaign as joint-top goal scorer with 23 goals and 14 assists.

Commenting on the award, Salah said, “It’s a great honour to win a trophy, individual or collective and this one is big so, very happy and very proud of that.

“This one is a really good one to win, especially because it’s voted by players. It shows you that you’ve worked really hard and you get what you worked for.

“I have my room with trophies in a cabinet and I made sure that I had another space for one more. I always keep space and just try to imagine that the trophies are going to come.”

Although he and his Liverpool teammates missed out on the Premiere League and Champions League titles, he helped his side to a domestic double; the FA Cup and the League Cup.

It’s the second time the Egyptian is winner the award after his first in 2017/18.

With this, he joins an 9-man list of players who have won the award twice.

They include; Mark Hughes; Premiere League Hall of Fame inductees Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry; Wales international Gareth Bale; goal machine Cristiano Ronaldo, Lucy Bronze, Kevin De Bruyne and Fran Kirby.

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr was named winner in the women category to become the first Australian to do so.

Kerr ended the season as the highest goal scorer of the Women’s Super League with 20 goals, all without penalties.

22-year-old City forward, Phil Foden was named the men’s young player of the year, while Lauren Hemp won the women’s best young player for the third season in a row.
