Miley Cyrus Got a New Birthday Haircut...From Her Mom

Miley Cyrus celebrated her 27th birthday earlier this week, but the celebration is still going. On Sunday, her mother, Tish Cyrus, posted a video on her Instagram account that shows her giving her daughter what she called "a little b-day haircut." This, however, is the Cyrus family we're talking about, so when Tish says "a little," she's not talking about a trim. No, Miley's mom took a sizable chunk off the ends—with a pair of safety scissors.

If this sounds like your personal worst nightmare, know Miley clearly had a backup in place. In the Instagram clip, Tish and Miley are standing in the bathroom together when Tish turns around and smiles before taking the scissors to Miley's jet-straight blond hair. But amid nervous emoji and Perez Hilton writing, "This gave me so much anxiety!" in the comments, renowned celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger also chimed in, giving insight into Miley's contingency plan: "Whatttt @mileycyrus now I'm really going to have my work cut out for me ;) see you monday."

And Monday they did meet to chop off even more of Miley's hair, transforming it into what Hershberger calls "a modern mullet." The goal, according to the stylist, is that Miley would be able to wear it "sleek, but also wavy and messy." Why a mullet? (Let's be real, that's not exactly the easiest thing to pull off without looking like an extra in Stranger Things.) As Hershberger puts it, Miley wanted something "edgy" and "to go more punk" for her 27th birthday. So the stylist worked her magic: "To get the edgy look, I precise-cut her hair with a pair of scissors and then used a razor to add definition,” she said.

The result? A choppy, layered shag that definitely has a mullet feel but isn't straight-up out of the ’80s. Take a look at the photo Miley posted to Instagram stories.
