Mark Rutte: The prime minister brave enough to admit his country’s inglorious slavery history

Some people were taken aback when Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, on December 19, 2022, apologised on behalf of the government for the Netherlands’ historical involvement in slavery and the slave trade. Although the slave trade era is long gone and the world has made significant progress, this does not negate that slavery left a lasting scar on the families and descendants of those involved.

Slavery is still an era that has not been forgotten around the globe to this day, especially for black people. Mark Rutte likely fully recognized this, which is why he felt it was appropriate to apologize anyway. This was a true gesture of modesty on his part.

Even though the apology, which was made at the National Archives in The Hague, may not completely undo the wrongs perpetrated by individuals who took part in the heinous crimes of the past, Mark Rutte was brave enough to admit his country’s inglorious past.

Rutte began his professional career as a manager for Unilever (and its food company Calvé) after finishing his studies. In 2001, he was moved to the Corporate Human Resources Group and in 2002, he was appointed human resource manager for IgloMora Groep, another subsidiary of Unilever company.

Political career

After a coalition deal secured the VVD numerous seats in his cabinet, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) appointed Mark Rutte as State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment in 2002. Following the 2003 election, Rutte was chosen to serve in the House of Representatives. This was the starting point of his political journey.

He held the position of State Secretary for Higher Education and Science in the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science from June 17, 2004, to June 27, 2006. He demonstrated a keen interest in making the Dutch higher education system more competitive on the global stage by attempting to make it more market-oriented while in government.

He then assumed the role of campaign manager in the 2006 municipal elections, becoming one of the VVD’s spearheads. Rutte has always been an impactful individual, and this came into play in 2010 when he led the VVD to gain the most votes cast, setting a record for the party as the largest in the house of representatives.

Election as Prime Minister

After he won the backing of a coalition between the VVD and CDA, Rutte was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Netherlands on October 8, 2010, coming in as the 50th prime minister of the northwest European nation.
