Los Cabos Open 2022 : All you need to know about

The Los Cabos Open is an ATP tennis tournament that is played on outdoor hard courts. The other name is the Abierto de Tenis Mifel for sponsorship reasons. It is the 6th edition of the mentioned tournament. It is a part of the ATP Tour 250 series of the 2022 ATP Tour. It is set to take place in Los Cabos, Mexico from August 1st through 6 August 2022.

The Russian, Daniil Medvedev, is the top seed. He is followed by fellow top-10 player Felix Auger-Aliassime. He is the second seed. Defending champion Cameron Norrie is the third seed. Miomir Kecmanovic is seeded fourth.

Veterans Fabio Fognini and Feliciano Lopez are present in the mix. Young talents like Brandon Nakashima and Tomas Martin Etcheverry will be expected to make an impact.

Los Cabos Open

It is a relatively new addition to the Association of Tennis Professionals circuit. The inaugural edition of the Los Cabos Open was hosted in 2016. The tournament was organized with the aim to revitalize the tennis scene in Latin America. It takes place in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Ivo Karlovic won the debut edition. Fabio Fognini, Sam Querrey, Diego Schwartzman, and Cameron Norrie joined him in the winner’s circle over the years.

This year, the tournament will be held at the Cabo Sports Complex. The main stadium of this new venue can seat 3500 spectators. The second largest stadium can seat 1200 fans.

Players

Top seed Daniil Medvedev and seeded fourth Miomir Kecmanovic headline the top half of the draw. The former is set to face Quentin Halys in the second round. Miomir could meet either Jordan Thompson or Yannick Hanfmann.

Fabio Fognini is a prospective quarterfinal opponent for Medvedev down the line. Brandon Nakashima, the runner-up in 2021, is in this half of the draw. He is playing against a qualifier in the first round. He could be in the quarter-final round against Kecmanovic on the horizon.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie, the players seeded second and third respectively, headline the bottom half of the draw. 

Auger-Aliassime will begin his campaign against John Millman. Norrie, the defending champion, will begin against Tseng Chun-Hsin.

Fernando Verdasco and Thanasi Kokkinakis are set to square off in the first round. Feliciano Lopez is playing against Radu Albot in his opener.

Schedule

The qualifying matches will be played on two days – July 30-31, 2022. The first-round matches are set to begin on Monday, August 1, and end on the following day. The second round is set to take place on Wednesday. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are to be played on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday respectively.
