“Is this what I should be doing?”: Chris Evans Began Second Guessing His Role in Marvel, Claimed “Something about this industry wasn’t healthy”
Hollywood is a melting pot of different ideas, with creative geniuses from around the world adding their own spices in their own personal ways, and making the whole experience for moviegoers richer every day.
But when it comes to dominating the box office, apart from a few exceptions like Barbie, the same industry is shrinking in terms of variety, as Marvel-backed movies have become the ultimate recipe for success. In terms of talent, there are only a few top directors, who haven’t laid out their ideas for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The same goes for actors. The likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise are among the rare high-profile stars who have yet to don any kind of superhero (and super tight) suit in recent years. Among the stars who have rocked these costumes with great success, few have been seemingly having second thoughts.
What Captain America Star Chris Evans Said About His Role in Marvel Movies
Chris Evans made his entry into the MCU as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the 2011 film set in World War 2, titled Captain America: The First Avenger. It turned out to be a box office success, grossing over $370 million worldwide, and paved the way for the character’s regular appearances in the universe.
His last appearance as Steve Rogers came in the 2019 super hit Avengers: Endgame, which recorded a historic collection of $2.7 billion worldwide.
Reflecting on his experience of starring in the franchise, Evans said in a new GQ profile:
“I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing? I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away—that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.”
In fact, Evans initially turned down the opportunity to play Captain America a few times. Ultimately, Marvel Studios managed to convince him – a development that proved to be great for them. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige suggested [via GQ] that Evans was one of the “additional pillars” – alongside Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. – that helped the MCU house stand today.
How Chris Evans Reacted to Quentin Tarantino’s Comments on Marvel Heroes
Despite Marvel’s ever-growing influence on the box office, there are still few big-name filmmakers who have so far managed to steer clear of the universe of alien powers and numerous timelines. And a few of them, including Martin Scorsese, have expressed some interesting reactions to these movies, which have left some Marvel fans upset.
Last year, Quentin Tarantino remarked on 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast that Marvel actors aren’t movie stars. “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star.”
Still, Evans somewhat agreed with the Pulp Fiction director that the character is the star. But the 42-year-old insisted the actor doesn’t feel the burden of it.
