With the incredible failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the game as a service sub-genre could use a break because players are very welcoming with this kind of title. But you are far from seeing this happen. In a survey that involves more than 500 studios, the answers will not be very encouraging for the players.

Sadly, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is not the first DC-based game to fail in the last couple of years. The last AAA game from the DC universe was Gotham Knights, released back in 2022. This title puts together all of the Batfamily in a single game with the goal of finding out what happened to the Dark Knight. You control Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood. This premise sounds great, but unfortunately, the game was not up to the task and was also not well received by fans and critics, with a 67 overall score on Metacritic.

At first, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League introduced a good idea: what would happen if the Justice League went rogue and started killing people because of mind control? Who would save the planet? Rocksteady has a lot of experience within the DC universe and was the chosen studio for this game. But the game as a service aspect, the gameplay and mechanics of the characters, and some decisions with the story all combined in an incredible failure.
Next for DC-related games is the already-confirmed Wonder Woman game. This title is in development by Monolith, the team behind Shadow of Mordor. Some details about this project include an open world with an original story set in the DC universe. Some job listings for this game describe procedural content. Wonder Woman was announced back in 2021.

The future of the game as a service model is bright, despite many failures
The survey that Griffin Gaming Partners conducted for more than 500 game studios proves that this model of game-as-a-service is nowhere near being concluded. 95% of the 537 studios that did the survey confirmed that they were working on or planning to work on a project of this type.
Other details confirmed that these studios think that the game-as-a-service model is the best way to achieve long-term success for a game; 66% in total think this. With the landscape of gaming changing with every passing day, it seems we best get used to this new style and genre of gaming, as it looks here to stay.
