“I have gay friends,” Charles Leclerc believes homosexuality is a completely normal thing
In the light of this year’s Pride Month, the entire Formula 1 community is abuzz with how there is underrepresentation of the LGBTQIA+ groups in this elite sport. Before the Liberty Media took over the ownership of Formula 1 from Bernie Ecclestone, it was considered that F1 is a reclusive sport that is reserved only for the rich and the wealthy. But over time, it has become much more inclusive, with Lewis Hamilton being the first person of colour to win a World Championship in F1.
Till date, there is no presence of queer individuals in Formula 1, and in a recent interview, Aston Martin F1 racer Sebastian Vettel talked about how this sport is ready to welcome an “openly gay driver”. Amidst all this, there has come up a report about the Buzz Lightyear movie that Charles Leclerc has dubbed in Italian. In the movie, there is a scene where two women kiss, and that has caused huge uproar among the moviegoers’ community.
Charles Leclerc talks about his views on homosexuality
As the Scuderia Ferrari racer has served as a voice actor in the Toy Story spin-off ‘Buzz Lightyear’ for the movie’s Italian Version, Charles Leclerc is aware of the controversy surrounding a scene in the animated feature film. In that scene, two female characters are found kissing each other. While most have praised the inclusivity of the new movie, some of the audience do not approve of it.
When Charles Leclerc was approached to talk about the controversy surrounding Buzz Lightyear’s scene in his recent interview, he said, “For me homosexuality is a completely normal thing. I have gay friends. Love is for everyone. F1 must lend a hand to those who aren’t able to express the difficulties in everyday life.”
Besides Charles Leclerc, F1 World Champions Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have also advocated for inclusivity in Formula 1. Now, it remains to be seen if a queer racer truly finds his place in the elite class of motorsports in the near future.
