An egg roll is a snack made with flour and egg. It Is a snack eaten and enjoyed by many Nigerians. It is one of my favourite snacks of all time but how many people know how to make egg roll?

Egg roll is a snack often sold on the streets in West Africa. It is accompanied by either a cup of tea or a chilled drink. The snack can be eaten either as breakfast or brunch because it is very filling. This snack is very similar to a scotch egg. The only difference is the dough being used to make egg rolls is made with flour, while the scotch egg is covered in mincemeat.While making egg rolls, the recipe lies in the dough making process.

The dough must be a bit wet and soft yet hard enough for you to handle. While making the snack, it is imperative to note that you must not wrap the eggs in the dough unless you are ready to fry them. If you wrap it before, the dough will continue rising, which is not good because it can make it messy. When frying the snack, make sure to use enough oil to cover the egg roll. The snack is fried in enough oil and on medium heat to avoid burning.

Rules to follow when making egg roll

Here are some rules you must follow when making egg rolls

  • Make sure to measure your ingredients correctly.
  • It is essential to make use of lukewarm water while making this snack, and also remember to add the water gradually and not at once so that the dough is not watery.
  • It requires enough oil as it must be deep-fried, not shallow fried, so that the insides can cook evenly.
  • When frying an egg roll, make sure it is on medium to low heat and not high heat. If it is on high heat, the outsides will begin to burn, and you will assume that it is done meanwhile the insides have not cooked yet.
  • Make sure to turn each side so that it is evenly cooked on every side.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • Two cups of flour
  • One egg
  • One tablespoon of baking powder
  • I tablespoon salt
  • 1/2tablespoon nutmeg
  • Two tablespoons margarine
  • 8-9cups of water
  • 3-5boiled eggs
  • Two tablespoons sugar
  • Oil (vegetable or groundnut)

How to make egg roll in Nigeria:

  • In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients flour, sugar, nutmeg etc. Make sure to sift appropriately before using.
  • Add in your margarine and mix with your hands. Make sure to mix it properly until the margarine is adequately mixed with the flour mixture.
  • Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Then begin to add the water gradually while mixing the dough. Add water until the dough becomes soft and sticky.
  • Knead the dough on a flat surface for about 20 minutes. Let it rest for a while.
  • After resting, knead it again for about 5 minutes and divide it into smaller portions.
  • Tightly wrap the eggs into the dough mix. In a pan, add your oil. It must be half the pot for deep-frying.
  • Ensure the oil is adequately heated, then fry your egg rolls on medium heat. You will know when the oil has been appropriately heated when it starts to form bubbles or make a sizzling sound. You can also test the oil but cutting a slice of onions and dropping it in the oil. If it is hot, it will make a sizzling sound. Make sure to turn it so that it doesn’t burn.

How to make egg roll with yeast:

  • Yeast can substitute for baking powder or baking soda when making egg rolls. The ingredients and directions are the same; however, when using yeast, especially if the yeast is not smooth, mix with warm water first to activate it before adding it to the flour mixture. But if the yeast you are using is smooth, you can add it directly into the flour mix.
