While there are many guns to choose from, Leon's most useful tool would arguably be his combat knife. This weapon can be used in hand-to-hand combat while also being a way to break a grapple immediately. Your knife can be repaired and upgraded by the merchant, and while you may not like getting up close and personal with the monsters in this game, the knife can be one of your best strategies.
Get The Fighting Knife
The Fighting Knife is the personal knife of Krauser and is held in Leon's face at different points throughout the game. This weapon can be obtained after beating Krauser's boss fight at the end of Chapter 14 and is a stronger version of your current knife in every way.
While Krauser is fought earlier in the game in an intense knife fight, he returns to fight Leon after it's revealed he was behind Ashley's kidnapping. This boss fights will start with a shoot-out between Leon and Krauser, followed by Krauser hunting Leon as he tries to escape the ruins. The final phase of the fight has Krauser begin to mutate, and you'll be stuck fighting him in a small area where he is very mobile and hits hard. Continue to climb the ladder to the upper area to shoot at him below, and jump down when he jumps up to try to stay out of his range. Krauser has a large health pool, and this fight may take a bit of a resource. Dodging his more powerful attacks is critical as he will quickly outlast you in a battle of attrition and trading blows.

How To Use The Fighting Knife
The Fighting Knife can be upgraded and repaired just like your combat knife. The Fighting Knife at base stats is far superior to your combat knife and should switch out your combat knife for the last two chapters of the game. Should your combat knife be upgraded a bunch, it can be sold to upgrade the Fighting Knife further. With high enough durability, the Fighting Knife can make it so you rarely need a backup knife.
With the Fighting Knife's superior damage and durability, you can use it for many more grapple breaks on enemies or as a much stronger melee weapon without having to fight enemies for nearly as long as before. Using this superior melee weapon against weaker enemies can also allow you to stockpile more ammo for the final boss, which is not far away.
