Guide for The Outer Worlds

Passage to Anywhere

Now you're in space. After a call from Phineas, head up to your Captain's Quarters and pick up the Holographic Shroud for a large XP bonus.

You'll have two options at this point: make a suicide run to Stellar Bay on the feral, monster-filled planet of Monarch, or.......pay for a ticket. We'll be taking the safe option here.

Head upstairs and in a dimly lit closet ahead, you'll see a rather ominous dead robot.

SAM closet

Walk up to him and interact with him to start The Cleaning Machine (Companion Quest 2/10). Head back to your quarters and check Alex Hawthorne's logs on his terminal to advance the objectives. Now the game will ask you to recover an "acid steeper". For now, we're gonna put that on hold.

Before going to the Groundbreaker, we're going to take a quick detour to Phineas' Lab. When you arrive, go across the walkway into his office.

Once inside his lab, you'll see the Hibernation Helmet (Spacer's Choice item #6) on a desk near the cryo-pod. Pick it up. Go into your inventory and equip the Light Assault Rifle, Light Handgun, Telescoping Staff, and Sentry Sabre in your four weapon slots. Now go into the next tab over and equip the Hibernation Bodysuit and Hibernation Helmet. Once everything is equipped, you should get:

If you don't have the Assault Rifle, it'll still unlock if you equipped the Sawed-Off Shotgun or LMG. If you didn't keep any of these items, you can still get it with the variety of Spacer's Choice-brand weapons you'll encounter throughout the game.

Before you leave, be sure to grab the Shrink Ray science weapon off his desk. Do not sell this gun. Now go to the Groundbreaker. Here, we will do a few miscellaneous achievements and recruit two more companions. Once you land and get to the front gate, you'll encounter Cpl. Leonard Wheeler.

Leonard Wheeler

He'll impound your ship and tell you to take it up with Udom Bedford. Further conversation with Leonard can offer the side quest Solution Vial. While you're here with both your companions, interact with Max to start The Empty Man (Companion Quest 3/10) and talk to Parvati to begin Drinking Sapphire Wine (Companion Quest 4/10). There's also lots more to do in this area offered by various NPCs, so I'd recommend you just speak to everyone you find.

While we're here on the Groundbreaker, we can quickly knock out a rather tedious achievement. Once you've passed Leonard's security check, head a bit forward and interact with the tool table on your right for an XP bonus. Turn left and head through the large door into a small bunk room where you'll find several ship employees. To the left of them will be two grey boxes you can jump onto, and they'll lead to a small hole directly ahead.

Crouch through the hole and you'll find yourself in a large room with a robot and a few hostile NPCs in your way. Kill them in any way you see fit. Loot all of their bodies and make sure that at least one of them is carrying the "Repair Hangar Keycard". Use said keycard to get into the locked red door, which will open up a small lab. Once inside, pick up the Prismatic Hammer science weapon from a toolbox. Do not sell this weapon.

Find your way out and go into the Groundbreaker's main area, making a beeline for the Rest-N-Go inn on the leftmost side. Head inside and near the garbage-filled areas, you'll see several Sprats, small rat-like aliens scurrying around. Don't approach them too quickly, as they run away. Make a quick save. Now is where you want to equip the Prismatic Hammer. Crouch near one. When he's looking directly at you, activate your TTD and smash him with the hammer. You should immediately get:

If not, reloading the save and trying again should net it. When you have that, go over to the marked room to meet Gladys, a kindly old info broker.

Gladys

In order to get her navkey to Stellar Bay, you've got the option of paying her 10,000 bits, or asking about her "opportunity". Accept said opportunity and it'll lead you to accept her side quest, The Distress Signal.

Head to the Groundbreaker Promenade to find Udom Bedford, a haughty representative of The Board.

Udom Bedford

If one or both DLCs are installed, skill checks may be higher than those shown in the base game walkthrough. The increase might be slight or significant. If the skill check, without DLCs, reflects the maximum value of 110, with both DLCs installed, it is likely to reflect the new maximum value of 150.

When you speak with him, use these speech options in the order they'll be presented to you:

  • Alex is dead.
  • What was your relationship to him?
  • [Lie 10] Uh. Yup. He sure did.
  • [Lie 10] He was eaten alive by feral canids.
  • "Again, I'm very sorry. Can we get back to the topic at hand?"

After these speech checks, Udom will lift the impound on your ship, then he'll ask about the location of Phineas Welles. We are not going to disclose this for the sake of this playthrough.

Travel to the Roseway colony to investigate the distress signal. Once you're inside the city walls, speak to these three NPCs to trigger three side quests:

  • Anton Crane for The Doom That Came to Roseway. Will give you the diet toothpaste recipe.
  • Vaughn Cortes for The Amateur Alchemist. Will give you the raptidon musk.
  • Orson Shaw for Vulcan's Hammer. Will give you the FORCE pistol schematics. Keep in mind that while you're in the Auntie Cleo's building looking for Orson's pistol schematics, you'll be able to find the Acid Steeper for SAM in the same building behind a locked door that you can either lockpick or hack your way into. If you're able to, try to obtain this while you're in Roseway to save yourself some time.

While you're exploring the Roseway wilderness, you'll encounter several wild Canids, alien dogs with leathery skin. Try to take damage from them until the game offers you a flaw, Cynophobia. Accept this, as you will never encounter the dogs often enough for this fear to make a real difference.

If you're still stuck on where to find the Acid Steeper, these images might help:

Once you've recovered all three bits of research, return to Anton Crane and make a hard save.

Anton

Now give him the toothpaste recipe to receive:

Now reload that save back to before you gave it to him, and travel back to the Groundbreaker to go meet Gladys again.

Gladys dialogue tree

Your dialogue options should look something like the image above, except that you'll actually have the toothpaste on you (silly me). Give Gladys all three of the researched items, for which she'll reward you with 7,500 bits all-together. By now, your large payment combined with any money you might already have will be enough to buy with the Stellar Bay navkey.

Now head up to the Medical Bay and you'll see Ellie Fenhill (Companion 3/6) chatting up a rather dismissive doctor.

Ellie

Talk to her to accept her mission, Worst Contact (Companion Quest 5/10). Once you accept this, head inside the medical ward and up ahead, you'll see a table with a Mardet ID cartridge on it. Make a hard save. Pick it up and walk through the Restricted door. There should be a guard in here. Sprint around them until the bar for the disguise depletes, and you'll be forced into a skill check. You can either use Lie, Intimidate, or Persuade to make them go away and refill your disguise bar. Do this two more times and you'll earn:

Now reload back to your hard save and you can continue with the mission normally. Once you finish the quest and return to Ellie, she'll offer to join your party. Accept her offer, and she'll meet you back at the Unreliable. If you've been doing the rest of the Groundbreaker side quests available, at this point you may have unlocked:

If not, there will be lots of opportunities to do this later, but this would be the earliest time to do so. Once you're good and ready, head back to the ship and you'll be approached by Felix Millstone (Companion 4/6).

Felix

Accept his offer and he'll meet you inside. Go onboard your ship. Before we finish up, we're going to finish a companion quest and start a new one. Go back upstairs, past the Captain's Quarters, to where the deactivated SAM bot is. Interact with him and install the Acid Steeper to unlock your latest party member, S.A.M. (Companion 5/6).

SAM

If it's available, you can also start on Parvati's second mission, Don't Bite The Sun (Companion Quest 6/10).

To Monarch we go!
