Frances Tiafoe was naturally frustrated after losing in four sets to friend and countryman Ben Shelton at the US Open. Only three times has he reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, and only once has he advanced past that stage – in New York last year when he fell in an epic to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Tiafoe’s loss to Shelton came on the heels of a straight-sets loss to Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon, and his emotions were evident in his press conference.

He said, “Just gonna learn from these moments. Obviously can’t keep having these matches in slams. Some things you gotta learn from. Obviously at the end of the day, it hurts now, play a lot of matches in this game. I still want to end the year strong and try to end in the top 10.”

The 25-year-old was questioned if it had affected him going into the race as the favorite rather than the underdog.

He was quoted saying that this was a different seat. Ben also really wanted to win. Shelton showed up and played with vigor. But the weather was different that day. It was really heavy. It was not something he was expecting after playing at night earlier in the week.

He was particularly frustrated by his failure to finish the third set, which Shelton won after a tiebreaker, and his poor start in the fourth set.

He admitted, “Yeah, it was a little bit of a lull and unacceptable on my part.
