Bangladesh football team was elected as a member of the AFC Executive Committee in the years 1982–1986 and 1998–2002.

The Bangladesh national football team debuted in 1973. It has never qualified for the World Cup finals.

They were defeated in the first round of their Asian Cup appearance in 1980. It was a huge thing to qualify for it as Bangladesh is one of the only two South Asian nations to achieve the feat.

The nation performed best at the South Asian level. It won the SAFF Championship in 2003, under the coaching of György Kottán. The team was a gold medalist in the South Asian Games. Bangladesh registered as one of southern Asia’s leading teams in the 1980s and early 2000s.

However, since the turn of the century, football in Bangladesh is lost somewhere in the shadow of the country’s national cricket team. This is due to the inadequate budget that is allocated to the team. There is also a lack of technical skills adaptation. Football remains a popular sport in Bangladesh but cricket takes the first place as it remains the most popular sport in the nation.

Colors

The Bangladesh national football team wears bottle green shirts and dark red shorts embedded when they set out to play. They also have red and green stripes on their jerseys. Green and red are the historic national colors of Bangladesh taking their inspiration from the national flag of Bangladesh.

The red color represents the sun rising over Bengal. There is another significance – the blood of those who died for the independence of Bangladesh. The green color stands for the lush green lands of Bangladesh. The present Bangladesh football team jersey is completely diametric to the regular one.

Home stadium

The Bangabandhu National Stadium

Bangladesh plays a majority of its domestic matches at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka. They won the 2003 SAFF Championship & 2010 South Asian Games in this stadium. The stadium was initially constructed in 1954. The Bangladesh Football Federation received the full authority to operate the stadium in 2004. Since that time, most domestic games have been played there. Other than hosting the 2003 edition, the stadium also became the venue for the SAFF Championships during the 2009 and 2018 editions.
