*1. Take Advantage of Free Online Layout Resources

If your space doesn't come with plans, there are some good resources for drawing your own before you start designing your home. As you're measuring the space, be sure to take into account moldings along the floor, outlet placement, the width of doorways, which way the door opens, and where windows sit, as these factors can dramatically affect the workability of the space.   1. Little Moments Can Go a Long Way

You don't necessarily need to do a full-on remodel or furniture overhaul to make a room feel substantially different. Here are some quick fixes:

Paint the trim or the ceiling a different color. A simple paint update can make a big difference.

Organize cords. This is a tedious task, but it's worth it. A visible tangle of cords can undo all your work in making a room look pulled together.

Upgrade outlet covers. If your outlet covers are yellowing, cracked, or covered with old paint, it's time to upgrade.

Swap lampshades. A standard lamp can get a big makeover by swapping out the shade.
