Deiveson Figueiredo put on 19lbs in 24 hours to win flyweight title at UFC 270

It seems one of the key ingredients to Deiveson Figueiredo defeating Brandon Moreno for the first time in their three-fight rivalry lay in his weight.

The Brazilian weighed nearly a stone-and-a-half more than his recorded weigh-in a day before his UFC 270 fight and seven pounds more than his opponent on fight night.

Figueiredo rose from 124 pounds to 143.2 pounds, which is only two pounds shy of the featherweight weight limit, a full two divisions above the title they were actually contesting at flyweight.

The now two-time flyweight champion looked in tremendous shape heading into his title bout on Saturday and was at his ripped best at the weigh-ins.

It’s possible he cut down more heading into the showdown giving himself plenty of room to hydrate and refuel before fight night, but with all the discussion around weight cuts in the past few years, it can’t be healthy to lose and add so much weight in such a short space of time.

As far as Moreno is concerned, their rivalry isn’t over after three fights.

The pair drew their first encounter with Moreno taking the title in the second, but Figueiredo grabbed the championship via unanimous decision at UFC 270 and Moreno is fully focused on a fourth fight.

“I want my manager to push for the fourth fight; that’s all I want right now,” Moreno told MMA Junkie in Spanish.

“I don’t want anything else. Obviously if it doesn’t happen, I’ll be pissed. I’ll say whatever I’ll say, and then the next day I’ll be focused on the opponent. But for me, it’s very clear what I want – I want the fourth fight.

“I want to fight Deiveson, and I want to finish this. I want there to be a clear winner in all of this.

“I’m willing to fight him in May or June so we don’t clog up the division and we have a finality to this,” Moreno said. “The balance is even, and this is caused by the draw in the first fight.

“If it wasn’t for that, we probably would’ve had a winner by now. A fourth fight is needed to close it out. Like I said, I’m willing to fight quick so we don’t clog up the division and have a solution to this.”

Figueiredo did say after his victory he would be more than willing to fight Moreno agai  and even suggested fighting him on his turf of Mexico.

He has since suggested he’d actually like to bring the fight to his own homeland of Brazil because if they went to Mexico, former double champion and member of his team, Henry Cejudo, ‘would never be able to leave.’
