Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Who is Leaking Information to Tony?

This recap of the Apple TV+ series Criminal Record season 1, episode 4, “Protected,” contains significant spoilers.

The Criminal Record episode “Protected” has expert plotting and genuinely keeps you gripped by its mystery. The episode begins at home, with June’s mother revealing to her grandson that the reason she hates the police is because they harrassed his grandfather, her husband. While this is going on, the family is watching a news story of June and Daniel’s press conference.

Later, Daniel interviews Reeves, who admits to the shooting. It seems pretty cut and dry with the confession he is able to pull from him. Following the confession, he calls upon June to go over the case in front of the entire squad. He smartly gets June to consider the confession as solid. Feeling compelled to agree, she does.

Daniel then tells the squad to consider that Reeves was forced into performing the shooting. He may be even taking the fall for someone else. He has now established, in front of everyone, that he considers all sides of a case, where June has a limited worldview. The supervisor then produces a witness who says the shooter was Turkish.

Apple TV+’s Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Who is the emergency caller?

Sonya and her do-gooders bring in someone who says a woman named “Carla” is the emergency caller. Comparing Carla’s behind-the-scenes profile shot on social media with the dark CCTV image, they look similar. Later, while June is looking for a Turkish man, she returns to Sonya with a realization.

Errol’s alibi, a man named Mustafa, who interviewed him for a job at the time of the murder, could have spelled his name differently. That means the officer who recorded his name could have gotten it wrong. Now, Errol’s key witness never went back to Turkey at all. He could still be in the area. That’s when Patrick, Errol’s now-teenage son, visits his mom’s grave.

Doris is there, tending to the grave. She told him she was told to stay away from Patrick and couldn’t abandon Errol. This is why Patrick is at home. She also tells him that a detective named June has new evidence. His father will be coming home soon. Patrick then visits Daniel at his home. Yes, they appear to have a relationship. Patrick wants to go through the case again. Daniel does, even hinting that Errol had an alibi, but it was proven false.

How does June find Mostapha?

June finds Errol’s witness with Google searches and goes through different spellings of the name. She finds a man with the spelling of Mustafa as “Mostapha.” He also used to cut hair. She locates him washing cars, still in London. Mostapha tells June that he was shown a lineup of pictures. He tells the DS that he cannot tell the faces apart.

He says, “They all look alike to me” and “I’m not racist.” On television, seeing Errol, he later wondered if he was the man he saw. June takes more exceptions, with Mostapha not coming back to tell the police later. He says he was too afraid of racist, right-wing officers. June leaves, disgusted and bothered by the exchange. June calls Sonya. She asks the DS if he would be willing to testify.

That’s when June sees her car lit up on fire. We find out later that Daniel found videos online of the incident that were gang-related. He takes June off the case and offers her 24/7 protection. Then, June is made aware of a workplace bullying complaint against her. June thinks it’s Daniel, but her boss informs her that Daniel arrested Isaac’s shooter this morning while doing “model” police work.

Criminal Record’s Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained: Who is leaking information to Tony?

Criminal Record ends with June finding out Doris’s employee Latisha has been leaking information about the retrial to Tony. Eight years ago, Tony arrested Lakisha on a theft charge. He dropped it if she agreed to report back what Doris was doing about Errol’s case. This time, she reported about Carla, whom June told her about prior. Tony then called local shelters, searching for Carla by name.

Carla calls Sonya’s cell from the flyer. She begs Sonya and June to stop trying to find her. They offer her protection, but she says they cannot protect her. Why? Because they are watching him. They ask who the protector is here, but Carla hangs up. The implication is that it has to be Daniel, who they are driving before the end credits.

Extras:

  • Patrick is dating a young blonde woman. We find out later, while Patrick is at Daniel’s front door, that it’s his daughter, Lisa. Daniel introduces her to Patrick, clearly not knowing they are dating. After Patrick leaves, Lisa texts an angry message to Patrick, wondering why he was there.
  • The complaint filed against June was by her coworker, Chloe, who helped her with the Pathe phone call. She claims that the bosses pressured her into admitting her part. She then tells June that June is putting pressure on her.
  • When June questions her lack of backbone, Chloe begins to accuse June of playing the game (press conference) and using her mixed race to get ahead in the department.
