Chris Rock made his first public appearance since Jada Pinkett Smith disclosed that they had not been in communication after the 2022 Oscars incident involving her husband, Will Smith. The comedian was seen maintaining a discreet presence as he departed the location of his upcoming film.
He is currently working on Maria, a biographical drama centering on the life of the opera diva Maria Callas, with Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Presently, Chris is in Paris, France, along with Angelina, her son Maddox, and the entire film production team, engaged in capturing scenes for this much-awaited movie.
Chris Rock Avoids Camera Following Jada Pinkett Smith’s Comments
Chris Rock left the film set and dodged the paparazzi’s relentless flashes. He donned an all-dark ensemble, comprising a black hoodie, track pants, and a baseball cap, which he used to shield his face from the intrusive cameras.
While Chris chose not to offer any remarks for the camera, much has been said about him, notably by Jada Pinkett Smith. In a promotional interview for her new book Worthy with PEOPLE, Jada candidly discussed the tension in her relationship with the comedian.
Last year, a significant incident occurred at the Academy Awards when Jada’s spouse, Will Smith, garnered considerable attention for his impulsive dash to the stage during the Oscars, where Chris Rock was serving as the host. The catalyst for this unexpected intervention was a comedic remark Chris had made concerning Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, which evidently did not sit well with her husband. She faced a question about whether Chris’s Oscars jest had offended her, but Jada’s response was rather indirect and not very explicit.
Jada Pinkett Smith told PEOPLE:
“I mean, that’s what comedians do. I would just have to say that I am not really here to make any judgment on how people decide to express themselves and express their art.”
During the interview, Jada Pinkett Smith also revealed a noteworthy anecdote about Chris Rock, mentioning that he had made an attempt to ask her out when he mistakenly believed she was parting ways with Will Smith.
Chris Rock And Jada Pinkett Were Never Close
Months after the infamous slap, Chris Rock broached the topic during his Netflix comedy special titled Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. Drawing a parallel to Jada Pinkett Smith’s disclosure of her “entanglements” on her Red Table Talk, where she openly admitted to an affair with rapper August Alsina, Rock made a noteworthy comment in his comedy special.
Rock said:
“Will Smith practices selective outrage. Everybody that really knows I had nothing to do with that s—. I didn’t have any ‘entanglements’…We have all been cheated on…None of us have ever been interviewed by the person who cheated on us on television. None of us. … Why the f— would you do that s—? She hurt him way more than he hurt me, okay?”
Allegedly, Chris Rock had previously made indirect comments about the Smith family before the 2022 Oscars incident. In 2016, Jada Pinkett Smith publicly protested the absence of nominations for actors of color at that year’s Academy Awards.
During the campaign for his role in Concussion, Will Smith was apparently advocating for an Oscar nomination, which he did not receive. In this context, Rock mentioned that Jada Pinkett Smith had contacted him, requesting that he refrain from hosting the event as a show of solidarity. It was reported that, during his Oscars monologue, Rock made jests about Pinkett Smith in response to this situation.
