Buckingham Palace Updated the Titles of Harry and Meghan’s Children on Official Royal Website
An unnamed source is said to have added that the duke and duchess invited King Charles III, the Queen Consort and the Prince and Princess of Wales to the christening, none of whom were in attendance.
At the time of Archie’s and Lilibet’s births, in May 2019 and June 2021 respectively, the siblings were not styled as prince and princess. This was in accordance with the centuries-old Letters Patent enacted by King George V in 1917, which established that only the grandchildren of the monarch (plus the first grandson of the Prince of Wales) could be afforded the title. The Prince and Princess of Wales’s children are styled Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Following King Charles III’s accession on the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September, Archie and Lilibet are now the direct grandchildren of a monarch. It was reported at the time that they are therefore entitled to be named Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, should their parents wish to style them as such, with the king having reportedly agreed to issue a new Letters Patent.
Held at the family’s home in the A-list neighborhood of Montecito, Santa Barbara, last week’s christening was reportedly attended by 20 to 30 guests, according to an anonymous insider. People adds that attendees included the duchess’s mother; Doria Ragland, Lilibet’s godfather, Tyler Perry; and an unnamed godmother.
A multihyphenate actor, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, Perry is said to have flown in from his Atlanta home with a 10-person gospel choir, who performed Oh Happy Day and This Little Light of Mine. The latter song holds deep sentimental meaning for Harry and Meghan as it was performed at their royal wedding in 2018. Following the ceremony, guests reportedly enjoyed an afternoon of food and dancing, with Archie taking to the dance floor with his one-year-old sister.
Harry and Meghan themselves were stripped of their HRH status in 2020, following their decision to step down as senior working royals, although they are still known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
It remains to be seen whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the young prince and princess will make the journey to the UK for the coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6. If they do, it will be Harry and Meghan’s first visit since the publication of his memoir, Spare, and the explosive interviews surrounding it.
