Baldur's Gate 3 is a game filled with collectibles around every corner, under every stone pile, and inside every chest. Finding these collectibles not only gives players something to do but also ties into the story of the game at unexpected turns.
Among these items are Soul Coins, prisons of souls trapped in eternal torment. Players can find Soul Coins in multiple locations across the map in all chapters of the game. Soul Coins cannot be crafted and can only be found by exploring the map.
Updated by Hamza Haq on August 28, 2023: With some time under our belts and a better overview of what the game has to offer, this article has been completely rewritten and restructured to encompass every single location of every Soul Coin found so far. It also comes with detailed instructions on how to obtain every Soul Coin, so players have an easier time locating them.
What Are Soul Coins Used For?
There are only two known uses for Soul Coins in Baldur's Gate 3.
Selling For Gold
Any vendor will buy Soul Coins if you decide to sell them. The final price a Soul Coin can be sold for depends on your relationship with the merchant.
Neutral Merchant Price (0 Attitude): 280 Gold
Favored Merchant Price (100 Attitude): 385 Gold
Empowering Karlach
The second use for Soul Coins is feeding them to Karlach to power up her infernal engine. After consuming a Soul Coin, Karlach does an extra 1d4 Fire damage when she's raging or when her HP is under 25%. This effect lasts until the next long rest.
All Soul Coins In Chapter 1
There are five Soul Coins in the first chapter.
Soul Coin 1: Bugbear Assassin (Emerald Grove)
Directly north of the Emerald Grove Environswaypoint, you'll find a small hill with a road that curves upward, ending with Tiefling standing in front of a telescope. Approach the Tiefling, and you'll see a bugbear trying to assassinate her from behind. This will trigger a combat encounter with the bugbear. Take him out and save the Tiefling.
After you succeed, talk to Nadira (the Tiefling), and you'll discover she has a soul coin in her possession. You'll be able to roll a dialogue check to convince her to hand over a Soul Coin to you. You can also pickpocket or kill her to obtain the coin.
Soul Coin 2: Trapped Sarcophagus (Dank Crypt)
Enter the Dank Crypt from any of its multiple entrances. Here, find the room with the large sarcophagus and all the traps. Directly to the right of the sarcophagus, you'll find two smaller ones. The soul coin is inside the one highlighted in the picture.
Soul Coin 3: Withers' Sarcophagus (Dank Crypt)
At the far end of the Dank Crypt, you'll find Withers (Respec NPC) in a chamber unlocked by pressing a hidden button on the side of a wall. You'll need to pass a perception check to find this button. Pressing it will revive a bunch of skeletons around the players.
Once they're dealt with, go inside the room and interact with the sarcophagus inside. Withers will emerge from the tomb and talk to the player. When Withers disappears, loot his sarcophagus to find a soul coin inside.
Soul Coin 4: Four Tombs (Dank Crypt)
To the west of Wither's sarcophagus and the large room with the statue, you'll find a door leading to a room with four tombs. Only one of the tombs can be looted, and it has another Soul Coin inside.
Soul Coin 5: Toll Collector's House (The Risen Road)
Head to the area where you can recruit Karlach. You'll find the toll collector's house with tons of monster corpses out front and Anders and the "Paladins of Tyr" inside. Climb the ladder on Ander's left to reach the second floor and use the door on the right to exit to the terrace. Press Alt to see a Soul Coin sitting out in the open.
Soul Coin 6: Reithwin Toll House (Shadow-Cursed Lands)
Located in Gerringothe Thorm's toll house in Chapter 2. Head to the back of the toll house and unlock the Heavy Oak Doors near the dock entrance to Moonrise Towers. In this room, there is a hidden area behind the bookshelves that can be unlocked by pressing a hidden button (perception check) beside the bookshelves. Press this button, and the bookshelves will move to reveal a hidden room. There is a Soul Coin lying out in the open on one of the tables in this room.
Soul Coin 7, 8, 9: Moonrise Towers
In the entrance hall of Moonrise Towers (before the throne room), you'll find Lann Tarv, a bugbear armor vendor in service to the Absolute. Lann can be found standing in the right section of the room, marked in the mini-map as a merchant. If you have Karlach with you, Lann will offer to give her three Soul Coins he has in his possession in exchange for her listening to the stories of the souls trapped inside, a gift from her friend from Avernus, Flo the Garotter.
Alternatively, you can also buy the three Soul Coins from Lann for full price. He also drops the coins if he dies.
Directly north of the Heapside Strand waypoint, you'll see a house under investigation. Enter to find a dead body lying on the ground. Behind the body is a hatch that leads to a basement hidden under some crates. Move the crates to head down. You'll find two more dead bodies (part of Dribbles The Clown questline) and a room with a strongbox installed into the wall. Unlock the strongbox to find 2 Soul Coins inside.
Soul Coin 12: Philgrave's Mansion (Lower City)
Philgrave's mansion is located near the docks just before the Heapside Strand waypoint. The mansion is filled with powerful monsters. You'll find a Soul Coin inside a pile of Viscera on the top floor on the east side of the mansion. You can sneak past the monster by using the balcony to head inside the mansion.
Soul Coin 13, 14, 15, 16, 17: House of Hope (Lower City)
You'll need to first enter the House of Hope from the Devil's Fee in the Lower City. Open the portal to enter Raphael's domain and sneak past him to find a lockbox in his private room hidden behind a painting with 5 soul coins inside.
