Amaarae: Queer singer whose songs are on charts of streaming platforms

Amaarae is a Ghanaian-American singer whose works are known to represent gender and race. Born in the United States of America, she became an internet and streaming platform sensation after releasing the song, Sad Girlz Luv Money, which featured another Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter, Moliy.

Ama Serwah Genfi, popularly known as Amaarae, was born on July 4, 1994, in  The Bronx, which is situated in the U.S. state of New York. She was raised between Atlanta, the U.S. and Accra, Ghana.

According to Celeb Worth, she attended Labone Senior High School in Accra before moving back to the U.S. for college. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Fine Arts. In addition, Amaarae studied English Literature at a university in the United Kingdom before she moved back to Ghana in June 2017.

However, it is known that Amaarae began nursing a music career at a young age. She wrote her first song at the age of 13. She was inspired to pursue a career in music by watching music videos while she was growing up. Her biggest inspiration came from Kelis’ song, Young, Fresh n’ New.

Career

Amaarae began her music career when she was in high school as she made mixtapes. She became an intern at a music studio at the age of 17.

In November 2017, she released her debut EP, Passionfruit Summers, via her independent record label, Golden Child LLC. Her song earned her recognition as one of “Apple Music Africa’s Favorite New Artists” in April 2018. She was also named “Apple Music Beats 1 featured artist” in the same year. In November 2018, she performed at ART X Lagos, a Nigerian art fair, alongside Teni, Boj of DRB LasGidi, and Odunsi.

On March 23, 2019, Amaarae was chosen to perform alongside La Meme Gang (Nxwrth, RJZ, KwakuBS, Darkovibes, Kiddblack, and $pacely) and rapper Kwesi Arthur at the first Boiler Room event in Accra. She has also worked with Wande Coal, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, on the song, Spend Some Time, in 2019.

On November 12, 2020, Amaarae released her debut album, The Angel You Don’t Know. In 2021, she remixed Sad Girlz Luv Money” featuring Kali Uchis. The song became a hit on social media and streaming platforms as it made the music charts globally.

In May 2022, Amaarae met US rapper, Kendrick Lamar, alongside Black Sherif, Stonebwoy and Smallgod, during Lamar’s tour to Ghana. Lemar held a private album listening party in Accra for his new album, Mr. Morales & The Big Steppers.

Apart from music, she is also known for her unique fashion styles. In 2018, she was featured online in Vogue Magazine in an article about four ladies with buzz haircuts from around the world. She was also named one of Vogue’s Top 100 Style Influencers that year.
