Alex Usifo was born on 16 April 1953 to Mr. Barnabas and Mrs Patricia Anobi Omiagbo and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. His father worked for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and progressed to become a manager. He received his basic/primary schooling in Ibadan, where the family relocated.
The civil war forced him to relocate to Edo State, where he finished his secondary school at St. John Bosco’s Grammar School in Ubiaja.
He was employed at Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Benin. He was a crew member that covered FESTAC ’77 for the Nigerian Broadcasting Organization. In 1978, he was admitted to SS Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija – Ibadan, to study for the Catholic priesthood after five years at NTA Benin. He left the seminary in 1981 to study mass communication at the University of Lagos. He also graduated from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with a master’s degree and Babcock University with a Ph.D. in Information Resources Management.
He was voted president of the exiting post-graduate students at Babcock during that time, and he graduated in 2016.

Career
Alex Usifo tried out for several media outlets such as Radio Nigeria Lagos, Voice of Nigeria, NTA Illorin, etc. He made it to the top of the list but was removed due to the quota system. He had been unemployed for a long time. He went to a Deeper Life crusade at the invitation of his friend/brother Peter Okun, where he prayed to God for a change in his situation and received the response: ‘search inwardly.’
In 1984, he made his acting debut in the telefilm The Return of the Native, in which he had a big role. In Natas and Two People, he played the lead. He began attending NTA Victoria Island weekly to participate in the At Your Service series. Between 1984 and 1987, he was a part of two NTA productions: Echoes of Life and Turning Wheel.
When he starred in Zeb Ejiro’s soap drama Ripples in 1988, he gained recognition. He played Talaab Abass. Because there were few soap operas on television at the time, the show made a splash. Talaab Abass was the bad guy. With bulging eyes and a baritone voice, Alex Usifo embodied the persona.
Usifo established a reputation for himself long before Nollywood existed. He appeared in some theatre productions, including Awero. This was performed at National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. He was also featured in Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again! by Ola Rotimi, also staged at the National Theatre. He made appearances on the radio and in films.
Usifo founded a modeling firm with Andy Amenechi [DGN] in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Later, he founded Silver and Gold Productions, which represents models including Sandra Petgrave and Toyin Raji.
The towering, baritone actor, whose signature look is a clean-shaven head, is a member of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria, and Association of Movie Producers. He has appeared in over 250 Nollywood films and is a member of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria, and Association of Movie Producers.
