Indianapolis - Bureau of Motor Vehicle services are expanding into your neighborhood travel office. The changes are the result of a new partnership between the Indiana BMV and AAA Hoosier Motor Club.
"I'm an anxious person. I like to get in and get out," said Cecil Jones, who was able to renew his plates at the BMV office Wednesday without waiting in line for hours. He says that's rarely the case.
"A lot of times if there's a long line, I'll just leave," Jones said.
The Indiana BMV processes about 12 million transactions a year. Some 60 percent of those deal with titles and registrations. Now AAA is teaming up with the BMV to take over some of that work load and offer a fast lane for car owners .
"This partnership is allowing us to have a partial service branch at our College Park Office," said Greg Seiter, AAA Hoosier Motor Club.
If you are getting a new driver's license, you'll have to wait in line at the BMV. For titling and registration, you can head to an AAA office.
"Obviously this is a win win," said Seiter.
The College Park office may look empty now, but once the word gets around, AAA is expecting plenty of car owners to get out of line at the BMV and head there to complete their transactions.
"It's helping them to decrease some of the traffic seen in their offices and bring in some of that traffic into our offices," said Seiter.
Also on hand at several AAA branches are self-service terminals where you can renew with the push of a button.
"It's sort of like an ATM machine where you can conduct basically the renewal of your license plates or your registration," said Seiter.
AAA is offering the BMV services at no added charge to its members. For non-members there is a $5 fee per transaction.
The service is available at AAA's College Park office at 8751 Wesleyan Road near 86th and Michigan in Indianapolis, Braeburn Village at 8120 East 21st Street in Indianapolis, Speedway at 3073 North High School Road, Clarksville at 999 Eastern Boulevard and Greenwood/Southport at 1309 East Stop 11 Road.
